Sonoma Valley Weather Cycle

Colorful Spring
Spring mustard in an old Sonoma VineyardLook for pleasant weather from March to June. Plan on the high daytime temperature range to be from the low 50s to almost 80 degrees in the daytime. Night temperatures drop to the 40s during March and April, and move up to about 50 degrees in May and June. There's a chance of rain in March, and April and even sometimes in May. Every year seems to offer up surprises. Most of the time, expect beautiful mild sunny days with some morning fog and light breezes.

Warm Summer
Summer is warm in Sonoma with the fog acting as our natural air conditioning. If there is no fog in the morning, daytime temperatures will be hot. Days in July and August can at times reach 100 degrees and up with low to moderate humidity. These occasional hot spells usually last for 3-4 days till the fog moves back in over the hills from the coast. For the most part, expect temperatures between 75 and 90 degrees. Northern California summer nights cool down to the 60 degree range or less depending on the fog. Almost no summer rain. Enjoy blue skies, sunny days and pleasant breezes.

Mild Autumn
At the end of September, the cooling begins. Look for temperatures in September to range from the upper 70s to the mid 80s. October drops back a bit: 70 to 80. November days will top out in the 70s. Plan on the evenings to be upper 40s to lower 50s. The rains usually hold off until November but even then expect mostly sunny days.

Winter Rains
This is the season of the most rainfall with partly cloudy dry weather in between "the rains". Heavy rain storms coming from the north can bring strong winds usually lasting a few days at a time. High temperatures range from the mid 40s to nearly 70 degrees. Cold spells with daytime highs of 40 degrees can happen for a few days in a row. Frost appears most nights when the sky is clear of clouds or fog. It is a memorable event if it snows in the hills and even bigger if it snows in the valley.
